Maxine, Melvin, and Do-Right our three of our mammalian educational ambassadors. They are Virginia Opossums, the only marsupial found in North America. Their mother and siblings were killed by a dog in Spring 2025. The four survivors were brought to us, but only Maxine, Melvin, and Do-Right ultimately survived. Opossums are largely nocturnal, but they do come out for snacks and to greet visitors. Opossums are very beneficial animals to the environment. Although native to the eastern half of the U.S., they are considered an invasive species in Oregon, California, and Washington since they were introduced to this area by humans. Due to their invasive species status, we could not release them back to the wild.
