Tiny Tim - Red-Tailed Hawk
(Buteo jamaicensis)

“Tiny Tim,” the Red-Tailed Hawk, came to us three days before Christmas 2008 with a fractured wrist and most of the tissue gone from one wing. The veterinarians suspected that he was either hit by a car and dragged or that he tangled with a barbed wire fence and lost. The flesh wounds healed, but the wrist did not, and we had to amputate the tip of one wing, rendering him flightless. Though raptor males are typically smaller than females, you would never guess that this little guy is the same species as Gaea, our female Red-Tailed Hawk, since he is less than half her size!
